Perfecto by Perforce Releases 2022 State of Test Automation Report

Survey of over 400 leading digital enterprises reveals continued struggle with test stability and test coverage that keeps up with changes in the market and modern applications.

MINNEAPOLIS, February 1, 2021Perfecto by Perforce, market leader in cloud-based automated mobile and web application testing solutions, today announced the release of its 2022 State of Test Automation Report.

Now in its third year of publication, this report outlines trends in testing, automation rates, and testing concerns and priorities for 2022 by surveying over 400 DevOps professionals across industries.

Trends Emerging to Address Test Stability & Coverage Issues

The survey revealed that organizations continue to struggle most with test stability and test coverage, especially while also being tasked to keep up with frequent changes in the market. Addressing these challenges with newer testing methods and technologies will be key in 2022.

“2022 will be the year of more shift-left testing,” says Eran Kinsbruner, Chief Evangelist of Perfecto.

“Shifting left is not just for functional testing anymore. Organizations are looking closely at API, performance, and accessibility testing, and exploring opportunities to shift these non-functional tests left as well.”

By increasing automation with more test coverage at earlier stages of development, teams can avoid time-consuming testing backlogs, expedite feedback loops, and deliver apps with fewer escaped defects.

Key Findings From the 2022 State of Test Automation Report

  • The most painful challenges for testing teams are test stability and test coverage. Keeping up with high value test suites is a great challenge as modern apps and the market continuously changes.
  • While manual testing still reigns as the most time-consuming aspect of testing, practitioners are increasingly seeing test failure analysis as a major bottleneck.
  • Over 60% of teams have an average release cadence average of either weekly or monthly. Yet release cadences that occur with lower test automation percentage rates can result in defects that escape to production.
  • The survey found that teams are focused on increasing automation and test coverage. However, despite link to faster releases, 66% of respondents automate fewer than 50% of tests.
  • Shifting left is correlated with faster releases. In 2022, organizations are looking to expand shift-left testing to API, performance, and accessibility testing.
  • Teams are increasingly adopting BDD and continuous testing due to the rise of AI-based test automation.
  • Key investments for test automation frameworks in 2022 include Cypress and low-code automation solutions. Playwright is an emerging framework that is gaining popularity as well.
